Public Housing
Conventional public housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Assisted housing comes in all types ranging from scattered single family houses to high-rise apartments. MHA owns and manages 785 public housing units, ranging in size from 1-bedroom to 5-bedroom units.
Unit assignment is based on family composition. MHA determines eligibility and rents based on:
- Annual gross income for all members of the household;
- Whether you qualify as elderly, a person with a disability, or as a family; and
- U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status.
If a family is eligible, MHA will check references to ensure that the family will be a good tenant. The Authority will deny admission to any applicant whose habits and practices may be expected to have a detrimental effect on other tenants or on the community’s environment.
