Family Self-Sufficiency Program

Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) is a voluntary program designed to provide MHA residents with the programs, support, and services needed to help them become independent of public assistance. A custom-tailored Individual Training and Service Plan (ITSP) is created for each participant with the ultimate goal of achieving self-sufficiency within five years.

Benefits of FSS

  • The FSS Coordinator helps families identify obstacles to success, such as lack of education, job training, transportation, and child care.
  • The FSS Coordinator works with clients to develop long-term goals.
  • With the support of local agencies, FSS participants receive education, assistance with developing job skills, and job search assistance.
  • Interest-bearing savings accounts are set up for families who succeed in finding employment and meet established criteria. When family income increases, money that would normally go towards higher rent is deposited into an escrow account. Upon successful completion of the program, the family receives all of the money, which could end up totaling several thousand dollars!
